Glen Johnson has selected Manchester City's primary opponent for the Premier League title in the upcoming season, leaving out Manchester United and Arsenal.
Next season, Man City under Pep Guardiola will aim for their sixth league title in seven years and fourth straight year.
Manchester City overcame Arsenal and won the league title by five points thanks to an amazing second half of the 2022–23 season.
City completed an incredible treble, the first by an English team since 1998–1999, by winning the FA Cup and their first UEFA Champions League.
Former England defender Johnson believes Chelsea will pose the biggest threat to City's dominance in the upcoming season.
Although the West London team had a dismal season last year, placing in 12th, Johnson believes that under Mauricio Pochettino, they will be the "surprise package."
He told Betfred, "I think there's a big gap between Manchester City and everybody else, but obviously I think Liverpool will get better next season."
If I'm being honest, I think Chelsea will be the surprise package and they won't contend for the Premier League title the following season.Chelsea has a great team, but they struggled mightily the previous season. With a new manager and a stronger team, I think they'll have a point to prove and be more competitive than everyone anticipated.
"They won't be good enough to beat Manchester City in the end, but I think Chelsea will be their closest competitors."
Former Premier League defender Jonathan Woodgate, meanwhile, thinks Manchester City can still win the quadruple next season and feels they have opportunity to grow.
Former Premier League defender Jonathan Woodgate observed, "There are always ways for football teams to improve," in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live. Every member of that team will tell themselves that they hope to improve the following season. Next year, what can they do? The quadruple can be won by them.
One thing they'll be considering is whether they can win four trophies the next season. That's your mindset—wanting to grow and improve—and I have no doubt that they will.
